Gran Canaria is a Spanish island in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, part of the Canary Islands group. Its biggest appeal is all year round sunshine and beaches. Volcanic activity aeons ago created the mountainous heights inland. Most of the tourist resorts are on the warmer south side of the island and include San Agustín, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán. The capital city is Las Palmas and is situated on the north of the island.
