Barnstaple is a town located in the region of River Taw and the area was once surrounded by a huge wall that acted as a strong source of defence from Danish raiders. A priory was established just outside the castle by Juhel of Totnes who later on lived in the castle as well. The butcher’s row here was built in the year 1855 and it consists of ten shops made up of bath stone.
