Self catering holidays in Ilfracombe - DevonHele Bay is a mile from the resort of Ilfracombe, North Devon In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Developed by the Victorians, Ilfracombe still retains some wonderful Victorian buildings. We have the most spectacular coastal scenery and a beautiful harbour. The South West Coastal path winds its way around the cliff tops providing the most stunning views across to Wales and also the most beautiful sunsets. What the Victorians did for us is celebrated each year by the Victorian Society. During this week in June it is highly likely that you will bump into The Queen, or the local bobby on his penny farthing bike. It is a major event in the North Devon Annual Calendar. You are invited to Afternoon Tea at the Vicarage, or a picnic at the bandstand and entertained by a Brass Band. There are parades, stalls and many people dress in their Victorian costumes. There is also a dress hire shop should you want to blend in! In and around Ilfracombe there are many Award Winning beaches. Hele Bay was a recipient of such an award in 2002. The Tunnels is a must for visitors to Ilfracombe. This is a tunnel dug out of the rock by Welsh miners and on the beach the bays are divided into two, one for the ladies and one for the gents. Not today though! It is a safe environment for adults and children alike in the tidal bathing pools. From the harbour a boat trip with take you to Lundy Island or around the headland, following the dramatic coastline to Lynton/Lymouth. A coach journey then brings you back through beautiful Exmoor. Ilfracombe 18-hole golf course welcomes visitors and, of course, there is crazy golf on the seafront or pitch n’putt at Larkstone. The Museum is a must for visitors and this is situated next to The Landmark Theatre where there are events, plays and concerts staged throughout the year. Ilfracombe is very proud of it’s Award Winning Green Flag Bicclescombe Park and although this is a little of the beaten track it is well worth a visit to see the beautiful grounds. There are also tennis courts that can be rented as well. Several theme and adventure parks are on the doorstep as well as gardens, castles and National Trust properties.
Foodies are spoilt for choice here. From takeaway to fine dinning we have it all. Tom Frost, described as Devon's Youngest Hottest Chef is at The Elmfield. Artist Damien Hirst owns The Quay on the side of the harbour and the upstairs restaurant is designed like the inside of a boat - interesting talking point over dinner. We have a great variety of tea shops for those infamous Devon Teas and many bistros to suit all pockets. Ilfracombe is well-placed for the holiday maker who wants to just stay put, or for the more adventurous who want to explore, there is something for everyone. A wait Devon welcome awaits you in Ilfracombe just don’t forget your camera! |
