Discover Essex in the south east of England on a self catering cottage break and uncover what makes this area so very special.

What Essex Offers for Self-Catering Breaks

Bordering Greater London to the south west, this area of East Anglia is well located for self catering short breaks for Londoners and others in the South East.  The parts of Essex near London are built up but further away from London the landscape changes to gently rolling countryside. Stansted, one of the London Airports is in north Essex and there are excellent road and rail connections throughout the county.

Discover Coastal Essex on a Cottage Break

Essex has a good number of attractions for a good self catering holiday. There are several seaside resorts on the eastern coast for days by the sea. Southend-on-Sea is the loud and brash amusement and entertainment centre with a regular programme of firework displays and events throughout the summer. Visit the casino if you are partial to a flutter or take the train to the end of the pier to view the permanent RNLI exhibition. The pier is a popular place for anglers who spend many pleasant hours waiting patiently for the fish to bite.

If you love to be by the seaside it makes sense to book a cottage by the coast whereas if you like to spend time in the countryside then a rural retreat or country cottage in Essex may suit you best.

Go north for more sedate seaside resorts such as Clacton, the good sandy beaches of Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. Mersea Island with its colourful rows of beach huts is the place to visit for the freshest seafood. Various river estuaries punctuate the coastline and here are found yacht clubs and marinas. Maldon is a must for holidaymakers, especially for family holidays. Sit and enjoy meals in the pubs on the quayside and enjoy views of the boats and barges. Book a trip on the barges to go seal spotting and the experience of one of these magnificent crafts. There is plenty of boating activity on several Essex rivers and canals. Visit Heybridge Basin near Maldon for canal-side walks and country pubs.

Explore the Essex Countryside on a Self-Catering Break

Rural Essex is charming. Explore small villages which feature thatched and pargeted houses in pastel shades. North Essex is the place to go for old towns and medieval villages. Roman Colchester is good for a day out and offers numerous places of interest.

Southern and mid Essex is recommended for hustle, bustle, shopping, theatres and entertainment. Travel to  London in 20 – 60 minutes for a  day out.
