Thinking of taking a self catering break in Braintree in Essex?  Braintree is an attractive market town located in the North of Essex, a part of Essex which many people find particularly appealing.  Braintree is well located for exploring many of the sights of North Essex.  There is a surprising amount of unspoilt countryside including windy country lanes in the North of Essex as well an interesting coastline to explore around Mersea Island and Brightlingsea, both just a drive away from Braintree. 

Braintree is one of the larger towns in the North of Essex and has an attractive town centre.  Many of Braintree’s attractive historical buildings are a result of the wealth of the wool trade which benefited the town way back in the 14th century. There are several museums located in the region of Braintree that give a brief account of history of the town.

Away from the attractive town centre, one of the biggest attractions of Braintree has to be Freeport shopping village on the outskirts of the town.  Many keen shoppers head for Freeport for bargains galore.  There are various outlets here where you can search for good deals and you may well get the best possible price on your item of choice here.

Braintree is surrounded by attractive countryside and Braintree is well placed for a self catering break in North Essex.  Colchester with its zoo, historical buildings and castle lies just 16 miles to the East of Braintree.  Whereas, 10 miles to the West is the attractive countrified Great Dunmow which is a pleasant place to stop for a coffee or pub meal.   Finchingfield, which is reputed to be one of the prettiest villages in Essex with its historical buildings and pond, is just 10 miles north of Braintree.  Halstead in Essex is another appealing place to visit whilst on a cottage break, with its many pretty historical coloured buildings and is just 7 miles from Braintree.   Much of the countryside around Braintree is that associated with farming Essex and can be breathtaking, particularly in summer time.

Another advantage of this part of Essex is that it is not too far from the border with Suffolk and it is possible to drive over to Suffolk and appreciate some of Suffolk’s attractions too.  Within a 45 minute drive you can discover some of Suffolk’s best preserved villages such as Long Melford and Lavenham, both pretty, idyllic places, perfect for country walks and taking it easy in tea shops or country pubs.
