Self catering holidays in Barton nr. Cheddar - SomersetBarton's earliest records are from its mention in the Compton Bishop Boundary Chapter manuscripts of 1068. Home Farm sits in the middle of Barton, a hamlet, which consists of about a dozen or so houses. Barton is an important historical location and has what historians call 'group listing'. This is a term given to a group of properties when at least three of them are Grade II listed. In this case Barton has four farmhouses which are Grade II listed. Home Farm is one of these. Home Farm was the home of members of the Fry family for many years. These were important local people, especially John Fry, whose name appears on the bells in Winscombe church. The Fry family were once the major family in the Winscombe valley, and whilst the farm was owned by the Dean & Chapter of Wells, it was rented to the Frys. |
