Just north of Bishop's Stortford is Stansted Mountfichet, and to the east on the other side of the M11 Motorway is Stansted Airport. Stansted Mountfichet is an ancient village with evidence of a community since the Stone Age. There are ruins of a 12th Century motte and bailey built by Richard de Montfichet, a Norman knight. In common with many other villages in north Essex, there are numerous well-preserved medieval buildings, a 17th century windmill that is open to the public, and many other interesting historical gems waiting to be rediscovered.

Stansted International Airport is the most pleasant of the London airports to fly from; it's far less busy than others, the approach and parking arrangements are clearly marked, and the terminal building is spacious, light and airy. A train staion is incorporated into the terminal with regular fast trains to London Liverpool Street. There is also a bus station.
