Chatham in Kent is a former fishing village with a long history of growth and redevelopment. King Henry the VIII sited his naval base there and ship building continued through the years. A permanent maritime exhibition features several historic ships including the Victorian HMS Gannet. The Museum of the Royal Dockyard covers over 400 years of history from the Armada to the Falklands.

Dickensian Rochester with its Victorian High Street, Castle and the second oldest cathedral in Britain lies over the River Medway.

The dockland area has undergone a period of regeneration in recent years with the building of smart flats overlooking the water. Chatham has good access to London and the Dartford Crossing into Essex via the M2 motorway.
