Mabels Oak Cottage - Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England

email self-catering cottages to friend Add self-catering cottages to favourites

Mabels Oak Cottage is situated just 2 minutes walk from the centre of Tetbury, where there is a variety of individual and interesting shops, including gifts, clothes, a good bakers, a superb traditional cheese shop, an excellent real butcher and a couple of well known supermarkets. The town has a reputation for fine antique shops, of which there are over 25 and a recent addition is the opening of The Highgrove shop with its connection to Highgrove House, home of Prince Charles. There is an abundance of excellent tea rooms, pubs and restaurants both in town and within a short drive.

The tourist information office is within 200 yds of the cottage for useful hints on where to go and what to see, and the owners live next door, so are on hand to help in any way. They may even baby sit with a little persuasion while you sample the local hospitality.

The property is over 200 years old, on three floors, and has been refurbished to a high standard with gas central heating, and carpets throughout. The accommodation consists of three good-sized bedrooms, one with a king-size bed, one with a double bed and one that has two single beds. A cot and high chair is available if required. Each bedroom has its own fitted washbasin and all bed linen and towels are provided. There is one family bathroom fitted with a shower and bath and an additional downstairs toilet with washbasin.

On the ground floor there is a lounge with pleasant rural views in two directions, and a glazed door direct on to a private decked area. It has a TV with freeview, a video player and DVD player. The patio is equipped with a table, parasol and chairs which is ideal for either just relaxing over breakfast, or perfect for a BBQ on a warm summer evening. There is a patio heater for the cooler evenings. There is a kitchen/dining room which is equipped with an electric cooker, a microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, a washer/dryer as well as many other essential items.

There is a large open garden, sloped down to the valley, and planted with a variety of mature trees. A patio area, and several garden seats in nice spots overlook the fields. Parking is available on site for one vehicle, with plenty of additional parking nearby. The steep lane leading to the cottage, and the steps down to the patio should be considered if disabled access is required.

In the best interests of the majority, smoking inside the cottage is not permitted. Pets by arrangement.

Local attractions: Tetbury is a delightful Cotswold Town with elegant buildings creating a sense of timeless beauty. Once a thriving market town, it has one of the finest examples of a Cotswold pillared market hall, built in 1655, that underwent major refurbishment in 2000, and is now restored and to be enjoyed by all. The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, built between 1777 and 1781, is open daily to visitors and worth a visit as it has been described as one of the "best Georgian Gothic churches" and boasts the fourth highest spire in England.

The town has a wonderful variety of shops including over 25 antique shops earning the town a reputation as an antiques centre.

When you need a break from all the sightseeing, sit back and relax and sample the delights of the numerous tea shops, pubs and restaurants in the town. Many of the shops in the town are individually owned so you will receive the personal attention of the owner and notice that several of them bear the Prince of Wales feathers as a sign that they hold the Royal warrant.

One mile south of Tetbury is Highgrove, the country home of HRH the Prince of Wales. Gatcombe Park, the home of the Princess Royal is also four miles north of Tetbury.

Two miles from Tetbury you will find the famous Westonbirt National Arboretum. It is set in 600 acres of countryside which include 17 miles of footpaths to explore. In the spring and autumn, spectacular colours have to be seen to be believed. Many events take place here throughout the year.

A little further afield there are numerous delightful Cotswold Villages, all with their own uniqueness: - Malmesbury, Cirencester, Bibury, Bourton on the water, Chipping Campden, Stow on the Wold to name a few. Other nearby towns include Minchinhampton near Stroud, Nailsworth and Dursley. The cities of Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham and Gloucester are approximately 23 miles away.

Good places to visit: Tetbury is located 23 miles north of the magnificent city of Bath and 11 miles south of Cirencester. There are several local golf courses including a 9 hole "pay and play" 2 miles away. The wonderful Westonbirt Arboretum is again only 2 miles away and is a great place to unwind. We are just 15 minutes from a railway station at kemble and 30 minutes from the M4, less than 2 hours by road from the centre of London.
Annual Events: Cheltenham Race Week Festival - mid March, Badminton Horse Trials - early spring, The Woolsack races - spring bank holiday Monday, Cotswold Air Show, Kemble - June, The Royal International Air Tattoo - at RAF Fairford in July, Gatcombe Horse Trials - early August, Polo - played regularly at Westonbirt and Cirencester, Craft and Antique Fairs - several major fairs held through the year, Tetbury Music Festival - early October, Westonbirt Arboretum and concerts held throughout the year.
