Aquitaine is a region in the South West of France with a long Atlantic coastline. Inland, lie the world famous vineyards of Bordeaux where wines such as Medoc, and Saint-Emilion are produced. The area is a wine-lovers paradise with many museums, vineyard tours and tasting opportunities available. Every July there is a four day wine festival where the wine is tasted accompanied by celebrations with fireworks and music. The festival is called
Bordeaux F'eate le Vin

The city of Bordeaux is a wonderful base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Atmospheric walks around quaysides lined by 18th century buildings followed by a visit to a restaurant or the theatre are a perfect way to spend an evening. The city has grown rich on trade for centuries and local museums tell of the city's past.
Aquitaine is also known for speciality foods. Bayonne Ham has been cured here since the middle ages; oysters from Arcachon are famed for flavour and freshness and the Perigord region is known for truffles. Every January there is a truffle market where the unique aroma of the truffles fills the air. Those with a sweet tooth will find the Gateau Basque Festival in Cambo-les-Bains unmissable.
To work off the excessive calories try a game of golf or climbing Europe's highest sand dune, the Dune de Pyla. Daredevils can sand board down the dune.

Afterwards, unwind in the spa at Dax where natural warm waters and therapeutic mud baths soothe away stresses and strains.
Of course, Aquitaine has its share of charming French villages and La Roque-Gageac, perched on a cliff face above the Dordogne River, delights with Gallic charm.
