Holidays in Galicia in Spain, rent a house, apartment or villa
For a thousand years pilgrims have made their way to the shrine of St James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Follow this ancient path to walk in the footsteps of history and meet pilgrims from all over the world. Wander around the medieval streets of city of Santiago de Compostela and experience the romance of centuries old stone buildings such as the pilgrims’ hospice or enjoy a glass of Spanish wine in the grand Plaza. The Mercado de Abastos is the city’s market and is known for gastronomic delights such as locally made cheeses, sausages and wines.
The Roman’s occupied this land and the Roman Wall at Lugo has stood for nearly two thousand years. For a modern way to discover the landscape of Galicia, try thrilling outdoor activities such as white water rafting and canoeing. With mountain peaks rising to 1,800m there are plenty opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. A land of traditional fishing villages and religious pilgrimage, Galicia is a land for travellers. The 1,300 km of wild Atlantic coastline and a forested interior makes for a landscape fit for discovery with hiking and the enjoyment of nature ideal outdoor activities in this sparsely populated land.
The coastline of Galicia is set with interesting geographical features. Flooded estuaries called Rias indent the coast. This unusual landscape provides a rich fishing ground and the coast is lined with traditional fishing villages. The village of Combarro is interesting because of the number of horreos, bizarre storage buildings built upon stilts. Fresh seafood is a specialty in the coastal villages and the locally caught octopus is especially good.
