  • This is the land where Hadrian built his wall that separates Scotland from England. The wall runs for 73 miles and was intended to keep the Scots out. Time has shown that it failed miserably. The wall was strongly constructed of stone in the north east but petered out to turf in the west. Did the Romans run out of bricks? Money? Much of the area on the English side of the wall is the Northumbria National Park - open countryside for walkers.

    Either side of the wall are tall imposing fortresses where bloody battles took place.

  • The entire area is steeped in history and every new town raises more questions than it answers. Long popular with walkers who love the rugged terrain and great expanses of wilderness, Northumberland suits anyone who would like a holiday with some walking and nature thrown in.
