Country cottages, holiday cottages, house rentals and apartments in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire
One of Hertfordshire's
historic affluent villages, Berkhamsted is a desirable location for professional
London commuters. In addition to the railway station there are good road links
leading to the A41, M25 and access to London, (Aylesbury just 13 miles away). The High Street offers
a good selection of essential shops in addition to high quality lifestyle
outlets. There are several pubs, cafes, restaurants, the inevitable estate
agents. A small high street supermarket and a larger quality supermarket
supply essential household requirement. The Art Deco cinema is always
booked far in advance. Architecturally,
it is a mix of old and new with well-preserved period buildings side by
side with modern constructions. Some of the notable older buildings include
the impressive Berkhamsted Public School founded in the 16th century,
the Church of St Peter's which hails back to Norman times and characterful
canal-side pubs. There is a farmer's
market on Saturday's selling quality local produce. Colourful canal boats
line parts of the Grand Union Canal that flows through Berkhamsted. The
canal path is a popular place to walk, feed ducks, and to stop for a meal
at one of the pubs. The ducks provide endless amusement in all weathers;
skating on the ice in winter or taking a stroll down the High Street. The roads of small
cottages and terraced houses were not originally designed for high levels
of car ownership with occasional resulting congestion but it continues
to be a desirable place to live with high demand for cottages, houses
and flats. The nearby towns of Hemel Hempstead and Watford offer excellent
shopping facilities. The designer outlet of Hatfield Galleria is a short
drive away for bargain hunting. The Ashridge Estate
with stunning bluebell woods is a good place to visit in early May. Popular
villages like Aldbury with village green, ancient stocks and duck pond,
plus Good Food pub are popular for Sunday days out. English country life
continues with traditional fetes and book fairs. Any country cottages,
