The long white sands of the Costa Blanca have long attracted tourists to the popular resorts of Alicante and Benidorm. Inland, rugged mountains offer an escape from the crowds and a chance to enjoy hiking or climbing in beautiful natural surroundings. For arts and culture, the city of Valencia is home to many centuries old buildings and national art treasures.
The yachting set head for the lovely palm-lined marina in Alicante. A 10th century Moorish fortification, the Santa Barbara Castle, overlooks the town. Other lovely buildings include the pretty archaeological museum and the darkly baroque Santa Maria church. Alicante is blessed with wonderful sandy beaches offering lively water sports and fun beach activities. Take an evening stroll down the Esplanada de Espana and enjoy the seafront buzz as locals and tourists take their evening walk amongst the shops and cafes.
Traditional dishes include the famous paella, made with rice mixed with meat or fish, and gazpacho soup made with locally grown tomatoes. Valencia is known for oranges and a refreshing local drink mixes freshly squeezed orange juice with fizzy Cava wine.
