Thinking of taking a self catering holiday in Edinburgh or a romantic cottage break in this Scottish city?  Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city and it may surprise you to learn that it is Scotland’s second largest city, the city of Glasgow is the largest.  Edinburgh is possibly most famous for being home to the Edinburgh castle and also the Scottish parliament.  Edinburgh also has two parts of the city that have UNESCO heritage status, Edinburgh’s Old town and the New Town.  Edinburgh is a city with a truly Scottish feel and for many a romantic city with some beautiful historical buildings, theatres, art galleries, great restaurants and a good selection of bars and pubs.

When visiting Edinburgh there are some great sights to see as well as some fabulous entertainment and arts in the city.  Whether you like ballet, theatre, plays, eating out or eating in, Edinburgh pretty much caters for all tastes. 

If you enjoy looking around historical buildings whilst on a self catering break, don’t miss Edinburgh castle which has to be one of the most photographed landmarks in Scotland and plays host to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo each year which is a veritable extravaganza with fireworks and cavalry displays.  The castle is surrounded by the Old Town and there is a Scottish National Trust property, Gladstone’s Land that you can visit near here as well as the Edinburgh Camera Obscura.  If you enjoy visiting National Trust properties and learning about how the rich once lived in Edinburgh you may want to head over to Edinburgh’s New Town where you will find another National Trust Georgian House to visit. 

Some other popular places to visit in Edinburgh include St. Giles' Cathedral, the Scottish Parliament, Princes Street Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Edinburgh Park, Edinburgh Dungeon, the Real Mary King's Close, and 3D Loch Ness Experience.   Grassmarket at the base of the castle is an area known for its restaurants and chilled out atmosphere.  If you enjoy a bit of excitement and want a tour of the city you may want to take one of the Ghost tours or other guided walking tours of the city.  Or for a completely different experience and do not get claustrophobic easily you may want to consider one of the underground city visits.

With its huge range of attractions yet relatively compact size, some find Edinburgh an ideal city to discover on a self catering break.  Self catering accommodation in Edinburgh is mostly in apartments or town houses to rent.  If you have in mind a country cottage or large country house to rent you may need to consider accommodation near Edinburgh and travel in to this magnificent city.
