What Does Betancuria Have to Offer Visitors?

The inland village of Betancuria with its rich history and valley setting by tall mountains offers ample Fuerteventuran charm.

With white-washed buildings, including a historical church with an ornate wooden door, interesting museums and cobbled streets, the history of this village dates back to the 14th century.  This tiny village was once the capital of Fuerteventura.  The historical part of this village comprises just a few streets, but what there is, is incredibly pretty and appealing.

This is a lovely place to enjoy a coffee or spot of lunch.  There are a couple of restaurants in town, as well as a charming local Bodega (just outside of the centre) that also does tapas.

The drive to Betancuria from the North or Puerto Del Rosario is not for the faint hearted with steep inclines, sheer drops, dizzying heights and fabulous viewpoints where you can look out for miles and miles over the awe-inspiring landscape.  All in all, the trip to Betancuria from this direction, makes for a memorable journey (look out for Miradors – the Spanish for viewpoints, en route where you can enjoy the most spectacular views).

Heading out of Betancuria on the FV30, the viewing points offer fabulous mountain and valley views and are made even more interesting by the large numbers of Barbary squirrels that have made this craggy and arid landscape home.
