About this Downderry dogs welcome Cottage for 8

Any families searching for a dog-friendly holiday home in Cornwall would do well to consider the Captain’s House in Downderry, Cornwall. The house stands in an elevated location overlooking the beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round which is a boon to any holidaymakers who like to take their pets with them. The beach is natural grey sand with a sprinkling of shingle.

This holiday home is a spacious Victorian villa, traditionally furnished. The rooms have high ceilings with classical coving. Guests would enjoy fabulous sea views from the windows at the front of the house and gardens and countryside at the rear. An early morning walk and paddle on the beach, with or without a dog, could be a daily pleasure. A terrace with garden furniture in front of the property offers a lovely place to sit and people-watch from on high.

The house is spacious inside and rooms are on three separate floors, so not recommended for anyone with mobility problems. It would be an excellent seaside holiday home for families with primary or secondary school aged children and especially dog owners because up to three dogs are welcome.

Cooking is on a large range cooker plus a microwave. Ample glassware and utensils are in the cupboards, clean and ready to use.

A doorway from the kitchen leads into the dining room where there is a table that seats eight. A piano in one corner of the room may be useful if you have a pianist amongst you and your family likes to sing. Doors from the dining room open out onto the terrace with its stunning sea views, outdoor table and chairs, barbecue.

A shower room is also on the ground floor. This has a free-standing shower, toilet and washbasin.

First Floor:

Three bedrooms, each sleeping two people; a double bedroom, a bedroom with adult-sized bunks and a twin bedroom. All bedrooms have crisp white cotton bedding and towels are laid out on arrival. Bring own beach towels. Family bathroom that has a full-size bath plus the usual W.C. and hand basin.

Second Floor:

This is where the living and relaxing accommodation has the best of views over the Cornish coast. Comfortable leather sofas stand around a coffee table. A rug on the floor and cushions on the window sills turn them into window seats. It is a lovely room to relax in as a family and watch television.

A snug may be somewhere to retreat to for a little peace and quiet away from the rest of the group.

Third floor:

A large bedroom that has a super-king bed and its own en-suite shower room.

Parking is on the road – no dedicated private parking.

Regarding provision for toddlers: a highchair is available but no cot. Holidaymakers should bring own travel cot for babies.

Downderry is on the southern Cornish coast, about six miles before reaching Looe and Polperro. It is a small village that rises up the hill. The narrow roads are lined with white-washed coastal cottages, many of which are holiday homes, surrounded by semi-tropical palms and lush shrubbery. It has that sub-tropical seaside appearance that is typical of this part of the southwest English coast. There are a couple of pubs.

A holiday in this part of Cornwall can be as lazy as you like it with paddling and games on the beach, or you could venture out each day to enjoy the various visitor attractions. The small Cornish villages are always a delight as are the picturesque harbours. Cornish ice cream is very good, the fish and chips are fresh and tasty on the coast, there are Cornish pasties to try, cream teas and all that natural beauty to admire.
