Along its western edge rivers flow down from the fells to the sea, their banks dotted with the remains of ancient castles and monasteries. Ride the century old miniature railway from the seafaring town of Ravenglass, with its 4 acre Roman fort, for 7 miles up to the top of scenic Eskdale.
