The area of Kirkcudbrightshire in the Scottish central belt offers a wide range of activities for visitors and locals alike. These range from quiet country roads for walking or cycling, to golf and fishing both of which are on the doorstep. For the more energetic there is also mountain biking, horseriding and hillwalking on offer.

Kirkcudbright itself, situated at the mouth of the River Dee on the Solway Firth, is within easy reach of a number of lochs to the north. Established as a Royal Burgh in 1455, Kirkcudbright has always been supported by a busy fishing trade. Behind the harbour the streets have housed generations of creative artists, a tradition maintained today by a flourishing colony of painters and craftworkers. This has led to it being called "The Artists' Town". Other well known features of the town are the pastel coloured houses and wide streets, the wide selection of mainly family owned shops where almost everything you may need for your self catering holiday can easily be found, and the free parking all over town.

Most of the rivers and lochs in the area hold trout and some offer excellent coarse fishing. Some of the lochs are managed by the local angling club and available by day permit. The marina at Kirkcudbright is very popular with visiting sailors offering one of the safest anchorages on the north Solway coast.
