Wigtownshire is a county of south west Scotland that derives its name from its county town. Wigtown lies less than a mile from Bladnoch, a village with a distillery producing malt whisky of the same name. The River Bladnoch can be fished for Atlantic salmon and has historically been well known as one of Scotland's finest rivers producing spring fish. It meets the River Cree in Wigtown Bay, meandering through a large area of salt marsh which has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Wigtown Bay is the largest Local Nature Reserve in Britain, and is home to a wealth of wildlife, particularly birds. Some people come to admire them from the comfort of the viewing huts situated near the harbour, others come to shoot them. The first pair of ospreys to return to Galloway in over 100 years arrived in 2004. A live camera link to their nest was created and can be viewed in the County Buildings.

Most of the Rivers in the region flow south to the Solway Firth and provide fantastic game fishing. The defining geographical feature of Newton Stewart is the River Cree. Running directly through the town, the River Cree offers some excellent salmon and trout fishing, as do the numerous rivers and lochs all within a 30 mile radius of the town. Coarse fishing is also available in the area and boat hire and sea fishing are available from the Isle of Whithorn.
