The former village of Shandwick is situated on the northern coast of the Moray Firth in the north east of Scotland, a natural unspoilt landscape rich in wildlife. People visit this part of Scotland specifically for the wildlife; for birdwatching, dolphins and seals. Small granite fishing villages sit along the coast huddled around ancient harbours. Fishing is no longer the mainstay of these communities - most boats are for pleasure and leisure only.

Shandwick is one of so called 'Seaboard Villages'. The other two are Balintore and Hilton a touch further north but really virtually merge into one. There are boats for fishing trips from Balintore Harbour and a fishing competition is held annually. There is also a much photographed mermaid that sits on a rock. This is the main harbour and the area gets quite busy during the summer months with day trippers and holidaymakers. There is a Jurassic fault in the Balintore shoreline which means that fossils can occasionally be found in the rocks but it is not recommended for families because of the rocky terrain. Ammonites have also been discovered in the Devonian cliffs.

The sandy bay at Shandwick is highly recommended for families with children. There is a mile sweep of golden sand providing hours of safe fun.

Bigger towns nearby are Tain, Dornoch, Invergordon, Alness and Dingwall - all good for shopping and days out.
