Ampthill in Bedfordshire is an attractive place to stay for a self catering holiday.  Ampthill is located above the Greensand Ridge and is surrounded by beautiful Bedfordshire countryside. Tourists mainly come here to visit the ancient site of Ampthill castle, which is now represented by a memorial cross. This was made in dedication to Katherine of Aragon by Horace Walpole. Self catering accommodation here tends to be available in the form of holiday cottages and apartments.

People can still find ancient buildings in the form of 17th- 18th century home and several Tudor buildings. These buildings include the Parish Church, which belongs to the 10th century and is Gothic. One notable attraction in Ampthill is Houghton House that was built jointly by Countess of Pembroke, Mary and sister of poet Sir Philip Sidney in the year 1621.

Adding to the popularity of this town is its association with Henry VIII, who paid frequent visits to this place during events such as archery contests. This town rides high with 200 listed buildings and elegantly lined streets. Visitors can also find the ancient clock tower that still dominates the market square of Amptill town. The turret of the tower used to be a part of the old moot hall in the year 1852. Ampthill should be an interesting place for those with a love of hisotry with its numerous old buildings.  The fascinating village of Woburn and Woburn Abbey are not too far from Ampthill if you want to visit a large mansion house.  Or enjoy a visit to the National Trust's Willington Dovecote and Stable near Bedford.  There is also plenty opportunities for walks in and around Ampthill which may be of interest if you like the idea of a self catering walking holiday.  We hope you find the right self catering accommodation in Bedfordshire for you,
