It's a pleasant small town with modern housing developments around it. The high street has all essential shops; excellent bakers, health food, and one or two old-fashioned but interesting shops. Large supermarket stores are located on the perimeter of the town. There are excellent leisure facilities; Promenade Park with swings, artificial beach, an indoor swimming pool with flume, gym, and Madison Heights with a superb soft-play centre for little ones, snooker tables and ten pin bowling. There are several good places for walks; along the sea wall, or the picturesque quayside where the Thames barges are moored and offer trips to watch the seals. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants for good meals out. Nearby places to visit are South Woodham Ferrers for its open farm and park, RHS Hyde Hall gardens, fen riverside walks, and a butterfly farm.
