County KilkennyCounty Kilkenny is a county characterised by river valleys and green hills. Thanks to the gifts of nature, outdoor pursuits such as golf, horse riding, walking and angling are popular. Canal barges can be hired to cruise the River Barrow.

A favourite place to stop whilst cruising is the medieval village of Graiguenamanagh. The village was founded by Cistercian monks and many old buildings remain, providing a charming setting for atmospheric restaurants and traditional Irish pubs. The village holds an annual Regatta every August.

Another charming riverside settlement is Bennettsbridge. The town originally grew up around a medieval bridge. Although the bridge has long since been replaced, the town continues as trading place and today is known as a thriving centre of artisan activity and the place to buy locally made Irish crafts.

The county city, Kilkenny has been inhabited since the 6th century. There are many historical buildings set amongst medieval winding streets. Part of the original medieval wall which encircled the city still remains. Of special interest is the 12th century Kilkenny Castle which is open to visitors, the 13th century Black Abbey and Rothe House, a 16th century merchant's house which now houses an exhibition describing the history of Kilkenny. In the summer months, Kilkenny Castle is the venue for performances of traditional Irish dancing and music.

Thirsty visitors will enjoy a refreshing visit to St Francis Abbey Brewery, in Kilkenny, where the ancient tradition of brewing is celebrated in an exhibition housed in Ireland's oldest brewery.
