Robertsbridge is a small village on the river Rother, about 10 miles inland from Hastings on the East Sussex coast. Robertsbridge is a busy village with many amenities, shops and pubs. The village no longer has so much traffic rushing through it as the A21 by-pass was built and completed in 1992. A market charter was granted to Robertsbridge in the 13th century and the town prospered, and grew as shown by the number of surviving timber framed houses, the oldest dating back to 1390. Robertsbridge is also home to the Gray-Nicolls company, which started in 1876 with L.J. Nicolls making bats in his workshop - he supplied W G Grace with the bat he used when he scored his 100th century.

From the coast to the countryside, seaside resorts to historic towns and picture-perfect villages, East Sussex is chock-full of things to do, days out and places to see. Along the coast where the South Downs meet the sea, the high chalk cliffs dominate. The Seven Sisters run west from Beachy Head, the highest sea cliff in Britain at 530 feet, to Brighton well known for its Royal Pavilion with its domes and minarets. To the East, Hastings holds a special place in the hearts of all Englishmen and was a thriving port even before William the Conqueror arrived. To the north is the attractive town of Battle which grew up around Battle Abbey. The Abbey’s high altar marks the spot where Harold is said to have fallen, pierced in the eye with a Frenchman's arrow. There is a fascinating battle-field trail and audiovisual display detailing the whole story of the battle. Perched on a hill, the medieval town of Rye seems almost suspended in time. It's small enough to make you feel at home but holds enough secret treasures to warrant further exploration. Whereas many towns boast a colourful history but have little evidence of it, Rye has many ancient and interesting buildings that bear testimony to its eventful past.
