Southern Madeira Cottages

Self catering holidays in Southern Madeira

So sorry there is a sad lack of availability in Southern Madeira at present.

May we suggest taking a look at alternative holiday accommodation in Madeira?

We recommend that you try our advanced Cottage Search facility to enter your basic essentials such as number of people in your party, tourist board grading, number of bathrooms and so on. This will create a list of possible holiday rentals. After that, refine the list by adding any other factors that might be of lesser importance such as near a pub or central heating.

Funchal is the capital city of Madeira and home to most of the Madeiran population.  Funchal is in the south of Madeira and many visitors to Madeira book to stay in or near Funchal when taking a self catering holiday.  Being a city, the self catering accommodation in Funchal tends to be in apartments.  Staying in self catering in Madeira can be a bonus.  You can try a variety of Madeiran varieties of fruit and vegetables in Madeira and one benefit of staying in self catering accommodation is you can go shopping in the market and then cook the local specialities yourself.

Funchal

Funchal is a pleasant enough city.  There are attractive squares and a number of pleasant tree lined streets.  You will find plenty cafe society in Funchal.  There are a number of pleasant cafes where you can enjoy a coffee or a glass of vino.  Although by the sea, the area by the port in Funchal is not the most appealing.   The centre of Funchal can be explored by foot but Funchal is not a small city so to see some of the sights you may need to drive, get a cab or catch a bus.  There is a hop on hop off bus which some find useful to explore Funchal and the nearby town of Camara de Lobos.

Attractions in Funchal include:

-        The botanical gardens
-        Monte,  the tropical gardens and toboggan run
-        The market with its vast assortment of Madeiran fruit, vegetables and flowers

Attractions within reasonable driving distance of Funchal include:

-        Cabo Girao – from this high view point you get a breathtaking view of the cliffs and sea way down below.

-        Camara de Lobos.  A few miles from Funchal is the fishing town of Camara de Lobos.  If you want to enjoy a picturesque setting near the sea then Camara de Lobos is a good place to spend some time.  Camara de Lobos is not currently a tourist spot as it is a working fishing town but it is likely that it will become increasingly touristy over time.

The South of Madeira and Funchal have lots to offer those taking a short self catering break or if you have longer in Madeira then Funchal can be a useful base from which to explore the island.
